The shelf life of dental accessories depends primarily on the type of accessory, sterilization method, and packaging material. The shelf life varies considerably under different conditions.

Storage life of sterilized instruments:

Textile packaging: Shelf life is 7 days, suitable for short-term storage.

Disposable paper bag packaging: Shelf life can reach 30 days.

Cream paper or medical non-woven fabric: Shelf life is 180 days (approximately 6 months).

Disposable sealed paper-plastic bag packaging: Shelf life is also 180 days, and sterilization can be determined by the color change of the indicator ink.

Unsterilized but opened consumables:

Filling materials (such as composite resin, glass ionomer) are recommended to be used within 1 to 2 weeks after opening, and no more than 1 month. Improper storage (such as exposure to moisture or light) may cause them to expire within a few days.

If refrigerated, some materials (such as glass ionomer) can last up to about one week; at room temperature, they will only last about 24 hours.

Unopened dental filling materials:

Resin and glass ionomer fillings generally have a shelf life of 1–2 years; amalgam fillings can last up to about 2 years, but after that, they may discolor or degrade in performance and are not recommended for use.

Other dental accessories:

Dental forceps: In a dry, cool environment, the shelf life is about one year. Moisture or impact may cause the forceps to rust, shortening their lifespan.

To ensure safety and effectiveness, all instruments and materials should be checked for packaging integrity, sterilization markings, and appearance (such as discoloration, unusual odors, etc.) before use. If any problems are found, discontinue use immediately.
