It typically takes 3-6 months to regain normal chewing function after implant restoration. The exact time depends on osseointegration, implant site, individual constitution, and postoperative care.
Recovery Process in Stages:
1-2 Weeks Post-Surgery: Initial Soft Tissue Healing Period The gingival wound gradually closes, and light eating is possible. Avoid chewing on the implant area at this time to prevent affecting blood clot stability. The diet should consist mainly of warm or cool liquids or soft foods, such as rice porridge, yogurt, and steamed eggs.
1-3 Months Post-Surgery: Critical Period of Osseointegration The implant begins to form a biological bond with the alveolar bone, and initial stability gradually builds. During this stage, a semi-liquid or soft diet can be introduced, such as soft noodles, tofu, and cooked vegetables, but hard foods should still be avoided.
3-6 Months Post-Surgery: Functional Recovery Period Osseointegration is basically complete. After X-ray confirmation of stability, a permanent crown can be installed, and a normal diet can be gradually resumed. Because the posterior teeth bear a large biting force, it is recommended to wait until 6 months of age before chewing nuts, hard candies, and other foods normally.
